Donations Suggested as Hartley Joins 2012 Walk to End Alzheimer’s

Brentwood Press writer Samie Hartley is doing something pretty fantastic on October 6, 2012 as she is joined the 2012 Walk to End Alzheimers in Sacramento. She has a goal of $150, but  it would be fantastic if she was able to reach her goal and much more. I wanted to share this information and ask for your support in supporting a great writer and a better person over there at the Brentwood Press.

I’m walking for my Grandma Jessie

I’m walking to help reclaim the future for millions. By participating in the 2012 Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m committed to raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer research, care and support.

I walk in honor of my Grandma Jessie who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2010. Doctors recently said she’s entered Stage 5 (out of 6) of Alzheimer’s. She rarely remembers faces or names anymore, and simple tasks such as holding a fork to eat have become a challenge.

I’ve seen what this disease does to its victims and their loved one. I wish I could write something profound and inspiring so people will donate, but it takes all of my energy to hold back tears when I think of our wonderful times together — the memories her mind has cruely erased.

I wish I could be with her in Indiana to sit by her side and offer a smile. We can’t talk on the phone anymore because she has trouble organizing her thoughts and forming sentences. My Mom is in Indiana with Gram. She visits the rehab facility my Gram has been in for the past 16 months every day she can. I can’t be there, but if walking a few miles makes a difference, I’d walk as far as my feet could carry me.

Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.

Please make a donation to help the Alzheimer’s Association advance research into prevention, treatments and a cure for Alzheimer’s. For the millions already affected by the disease, the Association offers care, education, support and resources in communities nationwide.

Thank you for your support! My family and I thank you for your kindness. The end of Alzheimer’s disease starts here.
