Updated: Oakley City Council Committee Assignments

Kevin Romick

It was brought to my attention that four committee assignments were left off the City’s original list which was provided to me yesterday by City Staff.  Mayor Kevin Romick actually has four additional committees than previously provided bringing his total committee assignments to ten.

The four additional committee assignments include:

  • Ad Hoc Downtown Planning Work Group
  • Contra Costa Transit Authority
  • East Contra Costa Fire Protection District
  • Oversight Board of the Successor Agency to the Oakley Redevelopment Agency

City staff called it an “oversight” on their part and the Contra Costa Transit Authority committee was appointed by TRANSPLAN which was not a city assignment.

Per my comments the other day, I still feel like Doug Hardcastle and Diane Burgis got the short end of the stick with their lack of appointments. Hardcastle should have been the appointment to the special districts while Burgs should have been put on HCP given both of their respective history.  Instead, both were appointed as alternates which likely doesn’t benefit Oakley very much.

Here is a look at the committee assignments for 2013:

Kevin Romick (Mayor): 10 assignments

  • TRANSPLAN, ECCRFFA/St. Route 4 Bypass Authority/EPAC
  • Contra Costa Transit Authority (Paid Stipend)
  • AD Hoc Ag Conservation Committee
  • Ad Hoc Downtown Planning Work Group
  • East Contra Costa Fire Protection District
  • Tri Delta Transit (Paid Stipend)
  • Contra Costa County Mayors Conference
  • Delta 6
  • League of California Cities, Voting
  • Oversight Board of the Successor Agency to the Oakley Redevelopment Agency

Carol Rios (Vice Mayor): 7 assignments

  • TRANSPLAN, ECCRFFA/St. Route 4 Bypass Authority/EPAC (Alternate)
  • Tri Delta Transit
  • East Bay Division of the League, Voting
  • ABAG, Alternate
  • Contra Costa County Mayor’s Conference
  • Delta 6
  • League of California Cities, Alternate

Randy Pope: 3 assignments

  • Habitat Conservation Plan Executive Committee/HCP Conservancy
  • Special Districts Liaison ISD (Ironhouse sanitary District) and DWD
  • Ad Hoc  Ag Conservation Committee

Doug Hardcastle: 4 assignments

  • Special Districts Liaison ISD (Ironhouse sanitary District) and DWD, Alternate
  • Oakley Inter-Agency Committee (Public Schools Liaison)
  • TRANSPLAN (PC Rep)
  • You, Me, We = Oakley

Diane Burgis: 4 assignments

  • Ad Hoc Downtown Planning Work Group
  • Habitat Conservation Plan Executive Committee/HCP Conservancy, Alternate
  • Oakley Inter-Agency Committee (Public Schools Liaison)
  • You, Me, We = Oakley

This was the original list provided by the City of Oakley based off the Mayors appointments.

  1. Looks like someone is a committee hog for crying out loud. Why does he get 10 and others get 3 or 4? Notice how he appoint himself to the committees that pay?

  2. Antioch City Council is looking not so bad as the days go on when comparing to Oakley. No big deal the Mayor has 10, he is the mayor for a reason. That is 10+ nights a month he is not home. If the other council members do not make a big deal about this neither should anyone else.

  3. Looks like we are going to have another candidate or two for a state office from Oakley! Pad that resume!!!!

  4. Maybe this is why Pope spoke up. Jeez, I’d want to rethink the vice mayor AND MAYOR if I was Pope, Burgis and Hardcastle. Is this a norm that the mayor and vice mayor have a majority of the committees and basically all of the regional committees? If this is the norm it seems counter productive. Having one person working all those committees spreads himself thin and becomes less effective.
I hope this isn’t Romick serving himself instead of trying to make sure his city thrives.
